Octopus: The Ocean's Intelligent Invertebrate

Here's something to look forward to, a little light summer reading perhaps (o)(O)(o)(O)(o)>

Octopus: The Ocean's Intelligent Invertebrate (To be released May 1, 2010)

Product Description from Amazon.com:

The visually arresting and often misunderstood octopus has long captured popular imagination. With an alien appearance and an uncanny intellect, this exceptional sea creature has inspired fear in famous lore and legends - from the giant octopus attack in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea to Ursula the sea witch in The Little Mermaid. Yet its true nature is more wondrous still. After decades of research, the authors reveal a sensitive, curious, and playful animal with remarkable intelligence, an ability to defend itself with camouflage and jet propulsion, an intricate nervous system, and advanced problem-solving abilities.

In this beautifully photographed book, three leading marine biologists bring readers face to face with these amazingly complex animals that have fascinated scientists for decades. From the molluscan ancestry of today’s octopus to its ingenious anatomy, amazing mating and predatory behaviors, and other-worldly relatives, the authors take readers through the astounding life cycle, uncovering the details of distinctive octopus personalities. With personal narratives, underwater research, stunning closeup photography, and thoughtful guidance for keeping octopuses in captivity, Octopus is the first comprehensive natural history of this smart denizen of the sea.

Species: Telescope Octopus

The Telescope Octopus is an elusive species that has yet to be fully explored. It is a pelagic - or open sea - octopus that can be found in tropical regions of both the Indian and Pacific Ocean.

Interestingly, the Telescope Octopus is transparent and nearly colorless, giving it an eery ghost-like appearance. The Telescope Octopus gets it's common name form the appearance of it's eyes, which are tubular. They are the only species of octopus known to have rotating telescopic eyes.

Little else is known about the biology or behavior of this spooky cephalopod.

Councillors Discuss Octopus-Inspired Building for Chiswick

Monday, January 18th
Thisislocallondon.co.uk

Councillors are to meet to discuss the potential arrival of a giant octopus-inspired building in Chiswick.

The Chiswick Area Committee is to meet tomorrow evening to consider a planning application for the five-storey building off Chiswick Roundabout.

Developers London and Bath Estates, the brains behind London’s Gherkin, hope the £52m office block, which will project advertising to drivers on the M4, will become a sculptural landmark to mark the gateway to London.

Managing director Kim Gottlieb said: “I’m confident it’s the right solution for the site. It’s a very interesting piece of architecture.”

However the plan has already been met with objection from the Brentford Community Council, which believes the site is not suitable for a high building.

The Highways Agency has also raised concerns that the advert screens could distraction to drivers and create a “serious highway safety hazard”.

The meeting takes place at 7.30pm, in Chiswick Town Hall, Heathfield Terrace.

Octopus News: Thousands of Dead Octopuses Wash Up on Portugal Beach

From: BBC.co.uk

Thousands of dead octopuses have washed up on a beach in northern Portugal, in what is being called an environmental disaster.
They cover a 5-mile stretch of Vila Nova de Gaia beach - no reason has yet been found for their appearance.
The authorities have warned the public not to eat them.

Um...generally when thousands of animals mysteriously turn up dead, sane people don't eat them. I dunno, maybe they do things differently in Portugal.

You can view the carnage in the video below...sad :(
NOTE: Video is incorrectly labeled "squid", however you will see that they are octopuses.
