Video: Lurking Octopus Makes Like an Umbrella

Very nice high quality video of an octopus lurking on a drilling platform. Once it's startled, it swims away. Great demonstration of how an octopus swims by jet propulsion.

Octopus Goes Looking for Love at the Seattle Aquarium

Published 02/15 on KomoNews.com
Written by Theron Zahn

SEATTLE -- Six hearts and 16 arms went on one very complicated blind date this past Valentine's Day.

Captain the giant pacific octopus was the lucky participant. Scientists at the Seattle Aquarium hope he'll mate with a female named Buster, and a crowd is here to watch.

"The most romantic thing we could think of doing on Valentine's Day," said Luke Reicheley.

Captain left behind a blast of ink at a diver, but once the diver made it to the other side of the tank, it didn't take long for Captain to turn on the octo-passion.

"They didn't seem to mind (there was a crowd)," said Laura Groennebaek. "They went right for it."

Biologist Kathryn Kegel says so far, so good.

"They're all together; all tangled up and were just waiting to see how it goes," she said. "A lot of times they'll do it in the evening and not actually in the public hours."

And who can blame them with everyone watching?

"I agree, nighttime is the better time," Kegel said.

So it looks like a love connection. Kegel says they could have up to 1,000 babies.

"They're about the right age and the right size," Kegel said. "They were checking each other out during the week."

The couple better find love soon, because next Saturday, Buster will get a new home underneath the pier at the Seattle Aquarium.

Sharktopus: The Movie

Feb 15th, 2010
Written by Brad Trechak for TVSquad.com

It's a match made in heaven. Roger Corman has teamed with SyFy to bring us the schlock science-fiction TV movie 'Sharktopus'. The movie is being billed as the SyFy version of the movie 'Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus', a title that abandons all pretense of subtlety, like 'Snakes on a Plane'.

Roger Corman has made his reputation on cheap, low-budget science fiction movies (including 'Little Shop of Horrors' and 'Death Race 2000'). SyFy (formerly the SciFi Channel) has set up its Saturday nights with the same concept. It would be surprising if that night didn't simply becoming another 'Roger Corman Presents'. At least people would then know what to expect.

Or, to make it even cheaper and show the same quality of movies, just show a Roger Corman movie every Saturday night. Who doesn't get the occasional hankering to watch the 'Black Scorpion' movies? Perhaps SyFy should also contact Troma and make the circle of sci-fi B-movies complete.

Will Everything Ocotpus readers go see Sharktopus?

Boy Nets a Killer!

Written by: Karisa Whelan, ulladullatimes.com.au

JOSHUA Carpenter was having a day out with his family at Lake Conjola when he made a surprising, and potentially deadly, find. Scooping through the waters of the lake to catch small fish, Joshua was surprised to lift his net and see something flashing blue, a deadly Blue-ringed Octopus.

Realising what it was, the seven-year-old called out to his parents, who rushed to his side and safely removed the small creature from the net.

Joshua's mother, Helen, said she was proud Joshua had alerted his parents when he realised he had caught the dangerous octopus.

"I was surprised and alarmed to see Joshua had caught the octopus as it was quite close to the shore and near our other children, one of who is only 16 months old," Helen said.

"Thankfully Josh knew what to do when he saw the octopus flash blue.

"We are really proud Joshua recognised it as a Blue-ringed, alerted us straight away and didn't play with it.

"I think it is a timely reminder for parents to be aware.

"I hate to think what could have happened if it had been a child who caught the octopus who didn't know what they had found."

After catching the octopus on Tuesday, February 2, Joshua's parents put the creature into a glass jar with methylated spirits giving Joshua a great item for show and tell at school.

The little octopus has since been shown in several classes at St Mary's School and Joshua said that all the kids who saw it had never seen one before.

Helen told the Times that both Joshua and his brother said there were a lot of questions asked by the students and teachers about where and how they got it.

ABOUT THE BLUE-RINGED OCTOPUS

DESPITE their small size and relatively docile nature, Blue-ringed Octopuses are currently recognised as one of the world's most venomous animals.

The creature can be recognised by its characteristic blue and black rings and yellowish skin.

It hunts small crabs, hermit crabs, and shrimp, and may bite attackers, including humans, if provoked or stepped on.

While there is no Blue-ringed Octopus antivenom available, people who receive immediate first aid are known to recover completely.

The toxin in a Blue-ringed Octopus bite blocks sodium channels causing motor paralysis and respiratory arrest within minutes of exposure, leading to cardiac arrest due to a lack of oxygen.

Invasion of the Giant Squids!

February 1, 2010

From Yahoo News

Giant squids! Sorry to startle you, but we're just so excited. You see, they're giant squids! And they're invading California beaches by the hundreds! And in a heavily attended press conference this morning, they announced plans to star in their own reality show!

OK, so maybe that last one hasn't happened (yet), but the rest of it is the honest-to-god truth. An article from the AP explains that the squids weigh up to 60 pounds each, but most tip the scales somewhere between 20 and 40 pounds. And, yes, they squirt ink when irritated.

Web searches on the giant squids (GIANT SQUIDS!) are already off the charts. One-day spikes on both "giant squids" and "giant squids in california" surged from near-zip into the thousands. Folks clearly want to see these gargantuan creatures for themselves.

Despite their intimidating heft and tendency to spew ink, the squids aren't scaring off local fishermen. As of today, around 400 of the giant squids have been nabbed by anglers. That number is likely to rise. An article from San Diego 6 explains that locals "started booking twilight fishing trips over the weekend to catch them."

The last time the giant (aka “jumbo” aka “Humboldt”) squid made waves in Search came last September, when a record-breaking 19 ½-foot-long, 103-lb beast was pulled from the Gulf of Mexico.

Now they're back with a vengeance. Wanna see the new ones for yourself? MyFoxLA hosts a collection of photos of nabbed squids.
