Cephalopod Ink Handmade Pottery

Funny things happen when I go deep into the wild of the world wide web in search of everything octopus. Sometimes I find myself falling down the rabbit hole, searching for one topic and ending up on another entirely. Today's post is the result of one fruitful fall, if I do say so myself. CephalopodInk.com is a handmade ceramics shop and gallery owned and operated by Tanya Casteel who disocvered her love of oceanic creatures when she moved from Kansas to Maine at age 19.

Artist Bio from CephalopodInk.com

I'm a full-time ceramic artist in Fuquay-Varina, NC (near Raleigh) My background in photography, my interest in science, and love of the ocean all informs my work. Each item is individually handmade, making them one of a kind. They are decorated with aquatic decal graphics that I make myself. The decals are applied last and fired in a kiln (during a 3rd firing) which transfers the iron-oxide pigment into the glaze; making it part of the glaze. The images will NOT come off! I also make all the glazes myself. My pottery is food, microwave, and dishwasher safe.

Now wait till you see the beautiful wares Tanya has created and sells on Etsy.com...Naturally, I want one of everything octofied.

Octopus Cup, $25

Cuttlefish Plate, $50

Octopus Bowl, $32

Octopus Mug, $32

Squid Tiny Bowl, $18

Tentacle Wall Art, $135

...and there's lots more where that came from! In addition to featuring some fine cephalopods, Cephalopod Ink also features a fun variety of ocean life including seahorses, eels, whales, coral and more. Check out Etsy.com/Shop/CephalopodInk for the full line of Cephalopod Ink ceramics.

Maine Cottage Octopus Pillow

I'm summering in Maine and thought it might be fun to poke around the eastern-most state and see what octopuses I could find. While this lovely, laid-back throw pillow was made in Wisconsin, it's got a chill, beachy vibe to it. Perfect to plop in your favorite chair and stare out at the vastness of the Atlantic!

MaineCottage.com Octopus Pillow Product Description

From the coral reef to the tidal pool. Incredibly excellent handcrafted pillows embracing the Seaside lifestyle we all aspire to. Punch up the color and vibrancy in a bedroom, on a sofa, or in a favorite chair. Think odd numbers. Decorating with 3-5 is always best.

Each pillow is made by artisans in Wisconsin that block-print by hand using "fine-art" printmaking techniques. Printed on exceptional linen and cotton fabric using environmentally sensitive, water-based inks that are free of solvents, lead and heavy-metals. Everything is washable and superbly color-fast, resulting in a product that is not only eco-friendly but also beautiful and durable.

Thomas Paul Octopus Duvet

Everything Octopus has featured the fine octotastic goods of Thomas Paul before, such as the Octopus Throw and the oh-so-luxurious Octopus Shawl, however none have been quite as grand as this octopus duvet. Available for purchase at BobbyBerkHome.com.

Ceramic Octopus Travel Mug

I just found the best accessory for a cephalophile on-the-go! Etsy designer, Sarah Constantino turned her love of crafting into a full-time career. Sarah's Etsy Shop, sewZinki is filled with many fun and fabulous handmade treasures, my favorite of which is this snazzy octopus travel mug, which is available in many colors.

Product Description

This hand painted eco-friendly white ceramic travel mug with lid is covered with long tentacled arms of a green octopus. From the depths of the ocean an octopus has crept to wrap it's wiggly arms around your beverage. He will keep watch over your travel mug and make sure would be coffee-snatchers stay away. He's also rather proud of you for choosing a re-usable ceramic mug instead of wasteful paper cups. It keeps his ocean clean.

Hand painted with heat set inks on a creamy white ceramic background. Each one made by me without tracing or templates, so no two will be exactly alike.

Take this 11 oz. double wall insulated mug with you to fill it up with a hot or cold beverage. You'll have original style and be doing your part in reducing landfill waste.

5.75" Tall x 2.25" Base x 3.5" Rim

*******MADE TO ORDER: Please allow 10 business days for mug to be completed due to my production schedule. I ship mugs USPS Priority mail domestically. I also ship internationally.

The paint used in this design is heat set for durability and non-toxic. I recommend hand washing with non-abrasive materials to preserve the color vibrancy. The mugs are micowave safe without the lid on. Paint contains no toxic ingredients and conforms to ASTM D-4236.

Sneaky Octopus Mug

One of my favorite gifts this holiday season helps me start my day the octopus way. Behold, the sneaky octopus mug!

I've found this mug available on many sites, although the least expensive I've discovered has been a favorite fun stuff resource of mine, McPhee.com.

"Our team of scientists has just recently discovered a new species of cephalopod, the mug-dwelling octopus. This tentacled, porcelain mollusk prefers the cozy confines of a simple coffee mug to the vast depths of the ocean. Each 3-1/4" tall, porcelain mug features one of these odd little octopuses on the bottom. Great for coffee, tea or ramen noodles! Dishwasher and microwave safe."

The octopus mug comes in a neato box too!

I highly recommend this octopus mug as a gift - to yourself or a fellow ceph-lover!

Octopus Chair by Maximo Riera

As both a lover of everything octopus and interior design, this piece really tickled my fancy! Truly a work of art, this is the throne I imagine the evil octopus overlord ruling his kingdom from...

Text from DesignBoom.com

Spanish artist maximo riera has designed 'octopus chair', a limited edition piece that is part of a larger collection entitled 'animal chairs'. The series consists of more than fifteen different works where the marriage between furniture and animal is the main component.

Choosing the chair based on its banality in our everyday lives, the series looks to bring life to the basic function of the object, making it more present while creating a stronger connection between the spectator, the chair and its environment.

Requiring a team of over thirty professionals and four different companies, the chair was produced using a CNC milling machine. mechanized sculpting tools then produced a series of forms cut from foam blocks. Each part was assembled, glued, sanded and painted by hand to create an object that transmits a dynamic sense of movement.

In case you haven't noticed, Etsy.com is a gold mine for octopus goods - clothing, jewelry, plushies, housewares, you name it! What's even more amazing is that items for sale at Etsy are all handmade, and who doesn't love the uniqueness of a product handcrafted by an independent artist?! Canada-based blacksmith, Brendan Duggan, has created some killer octopus lamps, which are for sale at his shop, Get Bent Metal.

The lamps sell for $1,500 (CAN) each, and while maybe not everyone can afford one, we certainly can all appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship of these cephalo-inspired lamps.
